Right now we all have to agree that the major challenge businesses face with their digital marketing is content creation. It’s all about telling your story, who you’re telling it to and why they should listen. This leads us to three main avenues of content creation. Engaging content, enough content, and a variety of content.

Back in 2013 CMI reported that 58% had difficulty producing engaging content, 53% found it hard to produce enough content, and 45% had trouble producing a variety of content. Up till today these still present themselves as some of the top challenges of digital marketing and will more than likely continue to be a challenge in 2016.

1. Content That Engages
It goes without saying that there is tremendous value in content marketing. Everybody and their cousins are doing it. Unfortunately they’re not doing it well and the market is overwhelmed with a lack of creativity. Remember when your mother asked you if you would jump off a bridge because your friends did it? Same thing here; digital marketers are creating content because that’s what you do. Most of them are not taking into account the fact that you have to be original and engaging.
 
Tips to create engaging content
1. Be original
2. Ensure there is value in it
3. Timing is everything (aimed at the target at the appropriate time on the right platform)
4. Make it irresistible (you have less than a second to grab their attention)
5. Stop being boring (more people are visual learners)

 
2. Creating Enough Content
The main challenge here is finding the time to create content. Most people in a digital marketing firm are already wearing many hats, and managing all those responsibilities can become a daunting task.

Tips to create enough content
1. Make creating a top priority
2. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose
3. Outsource
4. Interview people in your industry (include photos and video if possible)
5. Add outside content (excerpts and quotes)

 
3. Creating A Variety of Content
This is perhaps one of the greatest challenges of digital marketers. Created content can be static or animated, visual or audible, long or short, and the list can go on. Variety is the spice of life and there is a variety of platforms to host all the different kinds of content that is created. You are only limited by your imagination.
Some of the main types created today are posts (social media), blogs (websites), infographics, e-books and whitepapers. All require serious thought and consideration as well as time to develop.

Tips to creating a variety of content
1. Map out a schedule (ideally to the buyer cycle)
2. Adopt inspiration from others (don’t forget to inject originality)
3. Reuse and repurpose (if it applies, it’s valuable)

 
We’re all familiar with the catch phrase “Content Is King”, and it is, rightly so. We live in an information age where the buyer is in control. If it’s a challenge to create content that can grab their attention, hold it, and subsequently make them act on it then the future of your business is going to suffer. Hopefully the thoughts and tips expressed here can help you on your way to creating better content.
